There is a lack of frameworks pertaining to the online learning environment specifically, however one used regularly is the Community of Inquiry framework. This framework consists of three components; social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence. Social presence attains to the social and emotional aspect of learning, cognitive presence the meaning-making and critical thinking and teaching presence the careful design and facilitation of these processes to create a meaningful learning experience. Through a literature review of this framework, Garrison and Arbaugh (2007) have identified future areas of needed research in order to make this framework fully applicable, as currently this is lacking. These are identified as 1) methodological rigor in future studies, 2) refinement of connections between the components of the framework and 3) also testing this framework outside of the field of education.
